Kraits are elapids, dangerously venomous front fanged snakes that are related to coral snakes, cobras and mambas. They are brightly banded and may look like harmless king snakes or milk snakes. The krait in this picture is a black and yellow banded krait, Bungarus fasciatus. There are other species of kraits that are banded in black and white, some with narrow bands and others with very wide bands. Despite their deadly venom, kraits are usually quite docile and would rather hide their heads than bite, even in response to rough handling. Kraits are occasionally seen in venomous collections, although they are considered difficult to maintain because of their ophiophagous (snake eating) diet.
