Safe Venomous Snake Handling

Safe and gentle handling techniques are an important part of caring for venomous snakes. The method illustrated here on this blacktail rattlesnake (Crotalus molossus) is the "come along". The snake is not lifted off the ground unless additional support is provided for the lower body with a hook or by tailing. Its upper body is gently grasped with Gentle Giant tongs. The snake may be pushed or dragged a short distance to the transport container, or it may be given an injection with a pole syringe while this part of its body is stabilized with the tongs.
